Biodegradability is a function of the lubricant utilized and the system conditions (soil, humidity, pH, temperature, etc.). Petroleum products suffocate the grass roots, causing the grass to die. Petroleum based products biodegrade by 25% within one year in soil.
Biodegradable products biodegrade 80-90% within one month. Because petroleum oil is slow to biodegrade, it will take about one year for new grass to grow back. Soil and turfgrass damaged by petroleum spills typically will have to be dug up and replaced. This process is not only inconvenient and unsightly, but also quite costly. The effects of spilled petroleum oil on an area depend on the extent of the spill. If the spill is not too extensive, the oil will typically only affect the top soil, resulting in the problems discussed above. However, if it is a more significant spill, there is a high probability of contaminating the water table. There has been an increased interest by regulatory agencies on the effects of spilled petroleum based fluids on both top soil and the water table. While no laws currently exist restricting product use, early development of an environmentally sound program will be beneficial to golf courses for the long run.
